Local Area Information

Tweenbanx is all about the location! Nestled in sand dunes just a stone's throw away from Hayle beach there is so much to see and do. The beautiful beach of Hayle boasts 3 miles of golden sands, and during peak season the beach is fully lifeguarded from one end to the other. The beach stretches right from Hayle Estuary to Gwithian and Godrevy, and along the Towans just above the beach there are cafes and eateries where you can get refreshments.

The beach itself is absolutely stunning and looks out towards Carbis Bay and St Ives. At the other end of the beach you can look across to Godrevy Lighthouse. There is a coastal path which you can walk which takes you directly along the top of the beach. Whilst the stretch of beach ends at Godrevy, the coastal path continues right along the Coast of North Cornwall, taking you first to the dramatic Hell's Mouth, then to Portreath, Porthtowan and beyond. It really is the most beautiful scenery. Stop off along the way just past Godrevy lighthouse at Mutton Cove and you will spot the colony of resident seals basking in the sun on the pebbly beach below.

If you enjoy lazy days on the beach, paddling on the shore or splashing in the little pools that form with each tide, then this is the perfect place for you. If you are looking for something more active or if you are a bit of a thrill seeker then Hayle beach is an ideal location for watersports whether you are a novice or experienced enthusiast. Try body surfing, body boarding and surfing when the swell is up, or maybe hire a SUP board and explore the Hayle Estuary. There is even kite surfing available if you are brave enough.

There are lots of local facilities on offer where you can borrow equipment or book lessons. There is also CS Watersports Academy near The Bluff Inn who provide lessons and equipment hire for kitesurfing, power kiting, kite foiling, winging, stand up paddle boarding and surfing.

Gwithian beach is well renowned for it's swell and a favourite spot for local surfers. If you want to give it a go then check out Gwithian Academy of Surfing  where you can hire equipment and have lessons in both surfing and other popular watersports.

If you would prefer to admire the coastline from the comfort of a boat itself then many boat trips are available. Go on line where you will find a whole array of boat trips leaving from Hayle, St Ives and Penzance. These trips offer the chance to enjoy a ride around the scenic coastline as well as fishing trips and wildlife watching tours. Tweenbanx is not just about the beach holiday, there are many wonderful things to do and if you enjoy nature and wildlife, Hayle has it in abundance!

Hayle Estuary is a nationally renowned RSPB reserve incorporating a variety of habitats. During cold winters up to 18,000 birds can be found here, on what is the most southerly estuary in the UK and one of the few that never freeze. Birds flock here all year round and during spring and autumn it is an ideal place to see migrant wading birds, gulls and terns. In summer, if you are lucky, you may catch sight of an osprey and in winter months it is adorned with flocks of teals and wigeons and maybe a vagrant ring-billed gull from North America. The reserve is a keen focus for bird watchers and there are local tours groups which can be found on line. At Gwithian you will find St Gothian Sands Local Nature Reserve. Here you can spot  several species of geese, ducks, swans and other waterfowl on your walk out towards Gwithian beach.

Tweenbanx is not just a great destination for your summer holiday, it is a great place to visit any time of the year. In the winter there are some eye catching winter storms where you can watch the waves crashing over Godrevy Lighthouse from the beach/cliff top. It really is spectacular and is visited by the most avid storm watchers. Don't forget to take your camera!

Hayle and nearby areas also are splendid fishing spots. You can fish from the rocks of the rugged coastline, the beach or visit some of the local fresh water fishing spots sited locally. You may like to head to the South Coast where there are calmer seas and again some beautiful areas to fish from. There is a bait shop in Hayle town for your fishing needs. Even simpler, you can just head down to North Quay (8 minute walk) or South Quay (15 minute walk) with a crab line, and watch the sheer delight on children's faces when they 'catch' a crab. Sometimes the simple things in life are free.
